'...but , we also humbly ask ministerial officials, please do your best to support the startups here, not by paying them money or grants, but if they could develop a very competitive product… why not just try to encourage the use of their product designs produced by startups in Malaysia?..' This sentiment was my main takeaway from the recent KL20 Summit. At this summit, Datuk Pua Khein Seng made a compelling case for the government to adopt more products from startups. Yet, despite Malaysia’s ambition to become a leading tech hub in the APAC region, we find ourselves at a pivotal moment where the government’s action—or lack thereof—could make or break our potential. Datuk Pua’s plea highlighted the crucial need for government backing to foster a thriving startup environment, one that could be a game-changer for our economy. The integration of startup innovations promises not just improved governmental operations but also a testament to a genuine commitment to technological progress and the entrepreneurial spirit. Innoprise seeing new highs on elevated CPO prices Innoprise Plantations Bhd surpassed its two-year high of RM1.72 on Nov 1. The counter is one of the beneficiaries of strong crude palm oil prices, which have been holding above RM3,500-RM4,000 per tonne for 3 months. Innoprise like other plantation companies should be making higher profits given that their cost is around RM2,000 per tonne. Another plus point is the generous dividend payout. The group, which is 50.22% owned by Yayasan Sabah Group, also operates a palm oil mill capable of processing 60–90 metric tonnes of FFB per hour. Innoprise may not own plantation assets but it has got its land rent-free from Sabah government. Another major shareholder is TSH Resources Bhd with 21.94%. Its group executive director Tan Aik Kiong is also Innoprise’s managing director. Innoprise has a dividend policy of paying out at least 80% of its net profit.  For FY2023, it paid 9.5 sen dividends amounting to RM45.49 million or 86.83% of its net profit. In terms of FFB production, Innoprise achieved an 11% increase in FY2023 to 271,493 tonnes from 245,189 tonnes in FY2022. CPO production grew to 54,467 tonnes in FY2023 from 48,196 tonnes in FY2022, while PK production rose to 9,430 tonnes from 8,126 tonnes. Its FY2023 yield per mature hectare was 22.27 tonne/ha, up 8.8% from 20.46 tonne/ha in FY2022, due to higher hectarage being harvested and its oil palms’ improving maturity, Innoprise says in its 2023 annual report. Given that 92.5% of its palms are in prime maturity stage of eight years and more, Innoprise says it won’t need to replant over the next seven to eight years. Global demand for palm oil remains resilient, particularly in key markets such as India, China and Pakistan. In addition, palm oil prices are projected to rise, driven by forecasts indicating that global palm oil production growth in 2024 will be the slowest in four years. With demand for palm oil products remaining strong and the current level of CPO and PK prices, Innoprise should be able to post a reasonable profit in the year ahead.

Maybank's InvestASEAN 2024 conference titled "FDIs: What Matters" The Penang state government sees the Maybank InvestASEAN 2024 conference as an opportunity to highlight how the Mutiara LRT project and Penang Silicon Island are key drivers for attracting foreign direct investments (FDIs). Penang state government stressed upon the importance of Penang's LRT project (Mutiara LRT) as a crucial game changer in connecting Penang Island and the mainland. This will not only improve mobility of Penangites but also serves as one of the catalysts to the State's economic growth. The State Government is also impetuous in expanding its Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone through the establishment of high-tech Green Tech Park on Penang Silicon Island. Through Penang Silicon Island, the State Government anticipates a projected gross domestic product (GDP) contribution of RM1.1 trillion, attracting investments totaling RM74.7 billion and creating 220,000 job opportunities. Overall, it seems like Penang is trying to position itself as a well-connected and innovative state, making it a favourable destination for foreign investments.

Energy “Person” of the Year?‼️ For the 3rd year in row, “Energy” can be considered the key person (or theme) of the year. Amidst many developments that occurred throughout the year, here 10 reasons why energy remains in my opinion the key topic of 2024 👇 1. Dr Jekill & Mr Hyde- While renewables and clean tech keep growing fast, oil, gas and coal demand all mark historic demand records in 2024, showing the co-existence of two “personalities” of the energy system. 2. The Year of “Dragon” – China continues to mark record after record according to all energy metrics possible both for traditional sources as well as new ones. And a peak of emissions for China might become true very soon. 3. The Car-mageddon – it comes from far, but 2024 will remain the year in which the equilibrium of global car industry got shaken, with the vertical rise of Chinese manufacturers, while traditional giants issued profit warnings and announced cuts. A “war” worthy trillions of dollars and million of jobs has started. 4. American Beauty. The year showed once again the “super-commodity roots” of USA, with the country’s oil and gas production reaching new records and confirming its world leadership in hydrocarbon production 5. Usual Suspect(s) – in a fast moving world, the concept of “security” is important as probably has never been before. Because beside the security for the traditional part of the energy system, the security for new clean technologies, for supply chains and for critical minerals is becoming similarly crucial! 6. No Country for Old Men – as the deployment of renewables, EVs, batteries, heat pumps and other clean techs accelerates, so does trade, creating new flows, new alliances and new opportunities 7. Do the Right Thing – another year has passed with hundreds of millions of people lacking access to electricity and billions with no clean cooking facilities. Not fair and not right ..the urgency for solutions has never been more compelling 8. Point Break(?) – the Planet provides unequivocal signs of stress and sufferance with extreme events that have increased further in 2024, a year that is on track to be the hottest on record. 9. Back to the Future – hated or loved; feared or admired, the nuclear energy is making its comeback with two main challenges ahead: translate talks into projects; do that on time and on-budget. Good luck! 10. Matrix – if there is a single theme that emerged forcefully in 2024 it is the relationship between Energy and Artificial Intelligence. In the “Age of Electricity”, the relationship between electrons and bots will contribute to shape the power system of the future A lot of those themes will resonate in 2025 too… for sure!

A Tale of Economic Optimism and Renewed Hope A friend of mine recently shared a hopeful prediction: "2025," he declared, "will be a year of economic resurgence. The ringgit will strengthen, and prosperity will return." I couldn't help but smile. After the tumultuous years that had passed, such optimism was a welcome change. It wasn't just optimism, though. There was a genuine belief that things were turning around. Remember the dark days of 2018, followed by the challenges of the MCO? Those years were a test, a seven-year trial that seemed to have finally ended. The news of a revitalized economy was like a breath of fresh air. People were venturing out, roads were bustling, and the general mood was one of optimism. Even the rumors of increased traffic congestion were a positive sign, indicating that people were returning to their normal lives. So, what's the takeaway? It's time to sit back, recharge, and prepare for the next chapter. With renewed determination and faith, we can look forward to a future filled with prosperity and happiness. As my friend would say, "God willing, Malaysia will always be the best."
